Explaining the New Cover Style

Eagle-eyed readers will have spotted a new cover style appearing on some recent Gateway titles; for instance:

So, what gives?  Well, a couple of things. Firstly, we’ve published a lot of titles over the last three-and-a-bit years and now, inevitably, the production line is slowing down, as ‘new’ titles are becoming harder to find. So instead of having to produce covers by the hundred, we’re now rolling them out by the dozen, so the editors have more time to brief the covers and the designers have more time to spend on each one.

Secondly, while we love the original look, harking back as it does to Gollancz’s glorious past, it was fine when we had 1,000 or 1,500 eBooks available, but now that the Gateway tally is almost twice that (don’t worry: when we pass 3,000 titles, you’ll hear about it!), the vast seas of yellow are looking a bit same-ish and could do with breaking up.

And thirdly . . . well, who doesn’t like a change of scenery every now and again?  We felt it was time to change gear a little and make our eBooks even more attractive. We love the new cover style, as do all of the authors, agents and estates we’ve shown them to. We hope you do, too.
