Actually, there are quite a few other modern characters (though none so modern as Bob) in this book. There’s Wes Davis, who knows the U.S. Army is part of a Black Conspiracy. And Billy Koch, the great faith-healing evangelist who orders a robot replica of himself to share the burden of crusading. And Glen Dale, editor of Stagman magazine and, strangely enough, a virgin. And Wise Bream, god of the Utopi Indians. And others, too numerous to enumerate.

The Iralians were humanoid and techically free citizens of the Galactic Empire. But as slaves they were prized above all others, for they had the unique capacity to transmit acquired knowledge through heredity. And so when the space mercenary Wanderer was hired by GLASS (Galactic League for the Abolition and Supression of Slavery) to take a cargo of Iralians home it was going to be a simple task!

For one thing, they’d be hunted by interstellar slavers for their priceless passengers.

For another, the Iralians themselves had other ideas which included mutiny and high treason.

And for the third and worst, they were too close to the Horsehead Nebula, whose capacity for warping time, space and the dimensions was a permanent Red Alert for all spacecraft.

The year is 2087. The two great power blocs still face each other, with Britain having adopted the political role formerly occupied by Switzerland.

For 75 years the world has known of the approach of another solar system which will pass between our sun and its outermost planets. From here on the story is weird and wonderful, the action lively; the scientific ideas are intriguing and the social satire is amusing.

Robotic minds made interstellar travel possible, but human minds still controlled the destination and purpose of such flight. Conflict develops only when a programmed brain cannot evaluate beyond what is visible and substantial, whereas the human mind is capable of infinite imagination – including that which is unreal.

This is a story of the loot of the stars, of how Grimes graduated from operator of a space courier ship to master of a fleet of dreaded carriers of the skull and crossbones!

A space liner is a brilliantly designed machine. It is not the kind of thing that disappears without good reason. The Q 97 bound for Alpha Centauri vanished with disquieting suddenness. Stelgen and his crew of expert investigators went in pursuit…and also vanished!
On the other side of Infinity they found a nightmare galaxy where things of incalculable power plotted cosmic evil. Stelgen argued that somewhere, somehow, there had to be an answer to the apparent invincibility of these unbelievably deadly aliens. His problem was to find the answer and get it back to his own people. Trouble was, that someone from the Q 97 was working against him…
When an answer finally presented itself it was so beautifully simple that it needed a genius to see it, and whatever his other qualities Stelgen was not a genius.
